Why Tell Your Story?

Why Tell Your Story?

Everyone has a story – even if they don’t believe it at first.

β€œWho would want to read about my life?” my grandfather asked. β€œIt’s just average.”

To me, my grandfather’s life was anything but average. He was a pilot, started his own business, the son of a Quaker preacher, and married a fascinating woman he met at a sock hop because he loved her red hair. These weren’t just factsβ€”they were family treasures waiting to be discovered.

Helping him write his biography was the start of something much bigger. It opened the door to stories my whole family had never heard beforeβ€”even his own children. It was an incredible gift for all of us.

β€œI can’t think of anything a family needs more than this.”

A Gift That Touched Us All

When my grandmother turned 80, I wanted to give her something truly meaningful. I collected stories and photos from her family and friends, printed them into a hardcover book, and gave it to her as a surprise. She cried as she read the wonderful memories loved ones had written about her. She proudly displayed it on her coffee table for years to come.

I realized these books were more than just giftsβ€”they were lifelines to our shared history.

β€œI cried when my daughter gave me this book for my birthday. Reading those wonderful stories touched my heart. They might not mean much to other people, but they tie us together as a family.”

Why Our Stories Matter

As I created these books, I saw the joy they brought to the people I loveβ€”and I realized something deeper. These weren’t just their stories. They were my history, too. These stories were the building blocks of my family, the people who helped make me ME.

I wanted my son to hear these stories, to feel a sense of connection to his roots.

I wanted my grandparents to see the legacy they had built, and to know they matteredβ€”that their lives had meaning beyond their memories.

I couldn’t bear the thought that these stories might be lost.

These memories are more than stories:

  • They show where we come from
  • They connect us to those we love
  • They help us make sense of our journey
  • They are our legacies

β€œI had done a lot of genealogy research, but it was the stories that made my family tree come alive.”
